Maternity Services
Maternal Health for CALD Women Resource
eCALD Supplementary Resources
Women from migrant and refugee backgrounds in New Zealand have come from different health systems. In some countries services may be similar to those in New Zealand, but in many countries, health systems and the approach to maternity services are quite different. Differing health beliefs, expectations and language barriers can lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding between the health practitioner and women from backgrounds different from their own.
In this section, the cultural assessment tools will help you identify the woman’s background and past experiences which may impact on pregnancy, birth and postnatal care. The questions included: assess women’s cultural and religious practices and expectations and; cultural prescriptions about the kinds of food and the quantities of food that are appropriate for women and their babies to maintain good health. The tools will also assist you in assessing the woman’s expectations of her birth experience and birthing unit and postnatal stay. Culturally appropriate approaches to discussing family planning with CALD women are also included.
